History of Pediatric Surgery
Introduction
Continuity and sustainability of an idea, a work and a creativity in a society is in close connection with its coordination with the principle needs of that society, on one hand, and recognizing human’s rights as per the task they have undertaken in that work or creativity. Pediatrics surgery, as one of the branches of medicine with an academic and scientific expression which was developed in different countries-including Iran, from the second half of last century is not an exception. Surgery, in light of thousands year of experiences has been founded on the basis of experience, observation and research and in this path, it has continued its progress in path of completion and today it is able to carry out complicated surgeries in brain, thorax, heart, abdomen, bone and more than these, graft and implantation of members and organs. In as much that the modern surgery science has improved to a large tree with strong trunk and roots in the depth of history and fruitful and expanded branches across the world and pediatrics and infantry surgery is the achievement of this change and evolution. In the light of the thought and efforts of podiatrist surgeons, this branch has been changed into great successes from implantation of organs to the surgery on embryos during recent years. It has been 65 years since this branch has found its actual and documentary identity and awards specialty and subspecialty degrees to the trainees.
In Iran; too, this discipline has been founded by a few number of professors and pioneers and at present, we have been witnessing its improvement and radiation that has association, members and education boards as well as board education seats in the ministries.
Formation of pediatrics surgery discipline in Iran:
During 1973 to 1975, a number of educated specialists from Europe (Germany) returned to Iran with a strong will and settled at Tehran University (Bahrami, Amir Kabir, and Medical Center hospitals) and national university (Loghman, Taleghani, and Mofid hospitals) to plan pediatrics surgery education. With endeavors and frequent efforts, they established other sections in this field in Iran, Shiraz, Tabriz, Isfahan, Mashhad and mother universities and today, the academic qualification of all these centers have been approved.
Pioneers of pediatrics surgery in Iran:
The foundation of pediatrics surgery education was founded in 1973, in the light of efforts and activities of professionals such as Dr. Valiollah Mehrabi, Dr. Manouchehr Amir Feyz, Dr.Mohammad Mohsen Kheradpir, and Dr.Keyvan Rafieian. However, it should not be without saying that other peoples in the previous years performed pediatrics surgery operations, single and with no educational organization, along with general surgeon. As an example, one may name the late Dr. Sadreddin Nabavi, Dr. Ghodratollah Movaseghi, Dr. Abbas Khalesi, Dr. Kaviani, Dr. Piramoun Moghaddam, Dr. Farokh Mehdi Nejad, Dr. Mehdi Dehghan, Dr. Farokh Saeidi, Dr. Karim Vaezzadeh, Dr. Manouchehr Davani, Dr. Gerami and Dr. Firouz Gharehbeglou. A number of them left Iran and migrated to other countries later on.
Finally in 1979, Dr. Valiollah Mehrabi could have the first pediatrics surgery education approved by the Ministry of Science through establishing educational organizations and wards at Bahrami Hospital (affiliated to Tehran University) and made a serious action in making this field recognized. In this manner, it became a member of the general surgery and admitted its first subspecialty assistance for pediatrics surgery education; Dr. Hossein Yazdani, who became the first educated pediatrics surgeon in Iran. Approximately 30 years have passed from the beginning of pediatric surgery and more than 83 sub specialist pediatrics surgeons are now practicing pediatrics surgery in Iran.
What is subspecialty in pediatrics surgery?
Contrary to most academic fields, pediatrics surgery has also special characteristics and selecting this title is for those educated in this discipline.
What is Pediatric Surgery Association?
The education and specific movement and changes in pediatric surgery and the process of improvement in medical treatment brought along a new thought in as much as that in 1993, a group of surgeons established Iranian Pediatric Surgeons association as a contribution in achieving high academic goals and exchanging views. This Association now possessed a legal and natural situation as well as ideological independence. The association is also a member of other association and is willing to have better scientific exchange of views with all global scientific and cultural associations. The association has an independent office, site, and address. The pioneer and founders of the association are: Dr.Valliollah Mehrabi, Dr.Manouchehr Amirfeyz, Dr.Keyvan Rafian, Dr.Karim Vaezzadeh… and has its articles of association. The association has its board of directors, the members of who are elected with confidential vote taking.

What is subspecialty in pediatrics surgery?

- Pediatrics surgery is the same general surgery in power two; for, it treats all existing diseases in general surgery, plus the entire inborn disorders found in infants, even surgery in embryos.
- Only those physicians with general surgery board could take pediatrics surgery and after passing a three-year program of residency in pediatrics surgery and by passing another board, they are recognized as a board.
- education programs that are offered in three years are:
- General and specialty clinical embryology
- Physiology of infants and podiatrists
- Contagious disease surgery treatments including digestive diseases, urinary tracts, genital, orthopedic, restorative,…diseases
- Treating and surgery of acquired diseases up to 14 years of old, including digestive, urinary, genital, glands,… diseases
- Treatment and caring infants and children in trauma conditions (accidents, etc.)
- Surgery on embryo which is in design stage in our country.
